A perfume that feels gorgeous on a December evening can be unbearable in a Lahore June. Heat makes fragrance evaporate faster and project harder, so heavy, sweet scents turn thick and sticky. In Karachi’s humidity, it’s even worse.

Summer needs different perfumes. Not weaker ones, just ones built around notes that stay pleasant when the temperature climbs.

What works in the heat

Look for citrus notes like bergamot, mandarin and lemon, and for aquatic or “marine” accords. Light woods such as cedar and vetiver hold up well, as do tea notes and spices like ginger and pink pepper that feel warm without being heavy.

Save these for winter

Some of our most-loved fragrances are simply too rich for peak summer afternoons. Tuscan Leather, Black Opium, Vanilla | 28, Sauvage Elixir and Thomas Kosmala No. 4 are all beautiful, but they come alive when it’s cooler. In summer, keep them for late evenings in air-conditioned rooms, and use a lighter hand.

How to make your perfume last in the heat

  • Apply right after a shower, on clean, moisturised skin. Fragrance clings to moisturised skin much longer than dry skin.
  • Fewer sprays. Heat amplifies scent. Two or three sprays on pulse points (neck, wrists, inner elbows) is plenty.
  • Don’t rub your wrists together. It breaks down the top notes faster.
  • Spray your clothes lightly too. Fabric holds fragrance longer than skin, especially cotton. Test on a hidden spot first with light-coloured clothes.
  • Carry a 10 ml pen for a top-up after a long day out.
  • Never leave your bottle in the car. A summer afternoon in a parked car can ruin a perfume.

One more thing: if your bottle is new, let it rest in a dark cupboard for a few days first. A rested perfume lasts noticeably longer, and ours are made to go 8 hours or more on skin.
